UAS-NoiseCheck

RUNNING TIME:

11/2023

10/2025

Total project duration:

2 Years

Certification and regulation system for UAS noise emissions

Our activities in the project

The aim of the project is to develop and validate a prototype measurement system that implements the measurement standard recently recommended by EASA for determining the noise emissions of UAS in practice. In accordance with the EASA standard, a complete system consisting of an acoustic system for measuring sound pressure levels, an optical system for visual validation of the test flights carried out and a GNSS reference system for exact positioning of UAS during a test flight will be developed. The developed measurement system is being analysed as part of measurement campaigns and its suitability for the certification of UAS with regard to their noise emissions is being tested.

Project details

Unmanned aerial systems (UAS), such as drones, have undergone significant technological development in the last decade and will revolutionise civil aviation in the coming years in the form of a wide variety of applications. These range from image and video services, geometric surveying, industrial inspection, agriculture, mobility and logistics to airborne environmental and rescue missions. In addition to technical and economic issues, the question of social acceptance of drones is becoming increasingly important: one of the critical issues in the future will be noise pollution caused by UAS: Depending on their size and design, UAS cause noise emissions that are perceived by the public as a potential noise nuisance. A central aspect in the creation of socially acceptable conditions for drone flights in urban environments is the metrological investigation of UAS noise emissions for the certification of drones. Based on this document, the UAS-NoiseCheck project aims to develop a system for measuring noise emissions that can be used to certify UAS and subsequently enforce regulatory measures.
