Environmental, bioanalytical and diagnostic sensor technology combined with smart microfluidic lab-on-a-chip and organ-on-a-chip systems
We offer our customers development through to pilot production of innovative and cost effective microfluidic systems in combination with optical sensors for the following areas
Miniaturised biosensors and integrated microfluidic systems (lab-on-a-chip) based on polymer materials represent the core of our expertise. Based on optical and microfluidic simulations, we develop novel components and manufacturing processes based on micro- and nanostructuring processes, digital printing technologies, special surface modifications and system integration of optics and electronics.
This is how lab-on-a-chip devices are developed for the identification of pathogenic organisms, for food sampling, for environmental analyses or for medical diagnostics.

For the development of microfluidic systems, we offer the full range of technologies from design and simulation - structuring - biochemical surface functionalisation - lamination - functional printing to laser cutting.
This is where we benefit from our many years of experience in the development and technical implementation of chemo- and biosensors for the continuous recording of chemical, metabolic or biological parameters such as oxygen, lactate or glucose concentration, as well as toxic gases, heavy metals, bacteria and toxins.
The interdisciplinary research groups at MATERIALS have extensive expertise in the design, layout and manufacture (up to small series production) of microfluidic lab-on-a-chip systems, which have become indispensable in modern point-of-care diagnostics. This includes, in particular, microfluidic simulation using Comsol multiphysics. We are leaders in the development of opto-chemical sensors (optodes) and measurement systems for applications including process control, medical diagnostics, environmental analysis, authentication and food control.
Material development and surface functionalisation are done in-house, while we rely on partners for biochemical and diagnostic assays. The development of sensor systems for special applications extends to complete measuring systems (sensor chemistry, dye synthesis, optical and electronic components, evaluation software, etc.).
