A new functional indicator dye was synthesized that could be covalently linked to wound dressings from Evomedis. The photonic dye is sensitive to physiological pH changes with colour changes from yellow to blue. Since higher pH values indicate non-healing chronic wounds, the colour changes allow to monitor the wound healing process, and to adapt therapy.

The wound dressing used for the immobilisation of the indicator dye is bacterial bionanocellulose which is highly hydrophilic and nanostructured (composed of more than 95% of water). It is especially useful for burn wounds.
The coloration on the wound dressing is stable in both water and ethanol for more than six weeks without any leaching.
