Pilot line for free-form micro-optics

Freiform-Mikrooptik, Fotot: JOANNEUM RESEARCH

The Project

PHABULOµS is the European one-stop shop for the production of freeform micro-optics and offers accelerated innovation and production cycles from prototyping to piloting and large-scale production.

PHABULOµS aims to set up a European pilot line for the production of freeform micro-optical components by UV replication technologies (wafer-scale, roll-to-plate R2P and roll-to-roll R2R) with a clear roadmap for high volume production at competitive costs.

PHABULOuS has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement nº 871710.

Project details

To promote European competitiveness and support advanced technological developments, the European Commission is providing €3 million to the first users of the PHABULOuS pilot line services for the implementation and integration of freeform micro-optical components.

Freeform micro-optics opens up new possibilities for manufacturing products that are more energy efficient, reliable and/or aesthetically pleasing at a competitive cost. To make the implementation and integration of freeform micro-optics easily accessible, PHABULOuS has created the One-Stop-Shop for freeform micro-optical components, offering all services through a single point of contact.

PHABULOuS represents the entire value chain and consists of Europe's leading companies and research and technology organisations in the field of micro-optics. As a pilot line, we offer a full range of services, from optical design and development to pilot and series production, including tooling, material selection and quality control. Everything is harmonised to ensure a smooth process and reduce lead times from several months to a few weeks.

A total of EUR 3 million is available to support the realisation and integration of freeform micro-optics and the scale-up to pilot production. The pilot line services are available to all European companies, preferably SMEs, with an existing design or prototype at any TRL stage. Depending on company size, excellence, impact and realisation, up to 90% of the funding is available per pilot project.

This Open Call was made possible by the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement no. 871710 in public-private partnership with Photonics 21 and will run until November 2023.
